Il Mosnel, Franciacorta

An amazing day among the winery's vineyards!

My love for Franciacorta is no secret, so when we saw that Il Mosnel, one of Franciacorta's best and most famous wineries was organizing a day at the winery we had to be there.

Il Mosnel produces Franciacorta wine since 1836 in Camignone, a fraction of Passirano, in the heart of the Franciacorta region, and they've been doing it for 5 generations now. They have a wine club (Quelli che il Vino) that promotes wine culture and serves as a meeting point for wine lovers, they also organize events, like this one we went to.

The event was called "Quelli che si incontrano" (those who get together) and it consisted in a kind of get together in an informal atmosphere, with the winery, its nice building -with a great open gallery in the top floor, perfect for relaxing with a glass of bubbles- and its vineyards as frames of a perfect day.

It all started with a vertical tasting of their Franciacorta Brut Satèn (a vertical tasting consists of different vintages of the same wine from the same winery. It's done to emphasize differences between the different vintages of the same wine), vintages 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009. They had some sheets explaining how was the harvest that year, the weather conditions and the harvesting period - which varies with the weather conditions, for Franciacorta it's normally between August and September. Even my untrained palate could notice the differences between the different vintages and of course they were all perfect!

After the tasting we went for a tour of the winery with an explanation of the wine making process, the history of the winery, passing by the cellar (wow, so many bottles!).

After that we started a nice half an hour walk though the vineyards of Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir to get to a shaded area in the middle of the vineyards where a fantastic picnic was waiting for us, of course everything paired with their top wines, the Franciacorta Brut EBB 2009, the Franciacorta Rosé Pas Dosé "Parosé" 2007 and our favorite, the special QdE 2006.

At the end of the picnic we made it back to the winery and visited their shop, where we bought some bottles of the wines we tasted. A perfect day, thanks to Il Mosnel!
